When experienced mechanic Sherwood Cooke Jr. from Royalty Auto Service got a call from a local dealership about a cat trapped in a Mercedes-Benz engine, he thought it was a joke. But moments later, the seasoned auto repair pro would become an unexpected hero.
While test-driving the car, the dealership staff had heard faint meows coming from under the hood. Skeptical at first, Cooke approached the vehicle, straining to hear anything. Then it happened — a soft cry for help.
Peering into the engine bay, Cooke spotted a tiny gray kitten wedged in a dangerous spot. “I’d be scared, too,” he said, as the frightened feline hissed. With the help of his son, Sherwood Cooke III, they pushed the car into the garage, lifted it up, and carefully reached in from underneath. After a tense few minutes of feeling through tight spaces, Cooke gently pulled the kitten free.
Instantly smitten, Cooke called her “shop cat in the making.” The rescue pup Tink was equally taken, and the family decided to adopt her. Appropriately named Mercedes, the kitten received a clean bill of health at the vet and began her new life — spending days at the auto shop and nights at home with her new family, including another cat, Maggie May.
In her first week, Mercedes proved fearless, quickly adapting to the noise of the garage and the bustle of customers. “This cat fears nothing,” Cooke shared in a TikTok update. Now, she’s more than just a rescued kitten — she’s a beloved shop mascot, a symbol of compassion, and proof that even in the most unlikely places, a forever family can be found.
