This Puppy Was Abandoned Simply Because He Was Different

“Standing before us was this tiny soul, fighting with all his will to live.”

In California last month, a man out for a walk with his dog stumbled upon a heartbreaking sight — a helpless puppy left all alone in a dry riverbed. The way the pup was placed made it clear he had been deliberately dumped by someone who didn’t want him. Struggling to breathe and unable to walk because of his twisted legs, the little one would not have survived much longer on his own.

The man scooped him up and rushed him to animal control. Staff immediately began reaching out for help, but no rescues responded — until Leslie Bird, founder of NorCal Bully Breed Rescue, saw their desperate message on Facebook. Without hesitation, she dropped everything to save him.

Bird named the fragile pup Buggy and brought him to veterinarian Dr. Seth Bleakley. The vet estimated Buggy was about four months old, though he weighed just 10 pounds. His health issues were severe: an elongated soft palate that made breathing nearly impossible, a missing nostril, and unstable elbows in both front legs that left him hobbling.

But despite it all, Buggy’s spirit shone through. He was curious, joyful, and determined. Bird shared his story online, but not everyone reacted kindly. While many offered love and encouragement, others cruelly suggested he should be euthanized because of his deformities. Bird refused to let such negativity define Buggy’s future.

The vet also disagreed. Instead of giving up on Buggy, he performed life-saving surgery: removing the elongated palate, creating a new nostril, and stabilizing his legs with pins and splints. Recovery would take time, but Buggy was unstoppable. He walked on his splints as if nothing could hold him back.

“Keeping him calm is almost impossible,” Bird laughed. “Nothing bothers that boy.”

For Bird, rescuing dogs like Buggy is her mission. NorCal Bully Breed Rescue focuses only on urgent medical cases — dogs who would otherwise be overlooked and left behind. “These dogs often suffer in silence,” she explained. “Without rescue, they have no chance. We give them that chance.”

Thanks to surgery, Buggy now breathes better and continues to grow stronger every day. When the time is right, he will be put up for adoption — but only to a home that can love him exactly as he is.

“Buggy doesn’t realize he’s any different,” Bird said. “To him, life is beautiful. And we’ll make sure he lives a truly charmed one.”
