From Swollen and Abandoned to Thriving: Chance’s Incredible Journey

On what seemed like an ordinary September day in San Diego, the team at The Animal Pad, a rescue group dedicated to saving dogs in need, received an urgent call. An emergency veterinarian they often worked with had just admitted a young German shepherd. The pup had supposedly come in with a dog bite — but the truth was far more complicated.

When the rescuers arrived, their hearts sank. The puppy’s face was painfully swollen, almost unrecognizable beneath the puffiness. At just 7 months old, his bloodwork revealed he was battling chronic illnesses rarely seen in dogs so young. To make matters worse, his family had already surrendered him to the clinic, unable or unwilling to care for him.

That’s when the team at The Animal Pad stepped in.

As soon as Lauren, the rescue’s director, saw the puppy, she knew she couldn’t leave him behind. They named him Chance — because that’s exactly what he needed: one more chance at life.

Despite the obvious discomfort, Chance’s gentle nature shone through. His tail still wagged softly, and his eyes seemed to plead for kindness.

“You could tell he was a special soul, even through the pain,” The Animal Pad shared. “His first year of life should never have been this hard. Now he was fighting just to survive.”

Chance’s road to healing began with intensive veterinary care. Tests, medications, and one urgent blood transfusion followed. Eventually, vets identified the culprit behind his swollen face: a large abscess that would need to be surgically drained. The procedure was delicate and exhausting, but it worked. As the swelling subsided, Chance’s true face was revealed.

“He looks like a brand-new dog,” the rescue posted joyfully after the surgery.

Though the swelling was gone, Chance wasn’t out of danger. His blood still showed troubling signs, and his body was frail from months of illness. But now he had something powerful on his side — love. Day by day, his caregivers showered him with affection, nourishing meals, and steady medical treatment. With each passing week, Chance’s strength returned.

A few months later, Chance’s transformation became undeniable. The once-swollen, skeletal pup was now active, bright-eyed, and eager to play. Moved into a foster home, he delighted in the simple joys of life: romping with other dogs, curling up in his foster parents’ arms, and finally learning what it meant to feel safe.

“Chance is the sweetest!” said Erica Fiore, marketing director for The Animal Pad. “After everything he’s endured, he still greets life with love.”

Today, Chance remains under medical care for lingering conditions, but his progress has been nothing short of remarkable. Soon, he’ll be ready to find his forever home — a place where no illness or abandonment will ever steal his joy again.

Until then, his rescuers and foster family are cherishing every milestone, every playful bark, and every wag of his tail.

Chance’s story is more than a rescue — it’s a reminder of what can happen when compassion meets resilience. He was given up when he needed love the most, but with care and determination, he’s blossomed into the dog he was always meant to be.

And now, he waits for the happy ending he so deeply deserves.

If you’d like to be part of Chance’s journey, consider supporting The Animal Pad or applying to adopt once he’s ready. Because sometimes, all it takes is one chance to change a life forever.
