When rescuers first spotted the tiny puppy deep inside a sewer drain in Bali, she looked too scared to even move. Her fragile body trembled in the darkness, and no one could tell if she had accidentally fallen in or if someone had cruelly thrown her there. But one thing was clear: she needed help — and fast.
A desperate cry in the dark

Two years ago, Bali-based animal rescuer Selina Dey received a call about a small puppy stuck in a sewer. When she arrived, her heart broke at the sight. The puppy’s eyes glistened with fear, and she pressed herself tightly against the wet concrete walls. Every time Selina tried to approach, the little dog retreated even further into the shadows.
“It was very dark and very deep,” Selina recalled. “I was scared to crawl in, but I knew I had to try.”
For two exhausting days, Selina attempted to coax the puppy out with treats and gentle words. But no matter how patient she was, the puppy’s fear was stronger.
A plan that finally worked
Realizing she needed help, Selina reached out to her friend Mia, another devoted rescuer in Bali. Together, they devised a plan: set a humane trap with something irresistible. The choice? Fried chicken.

At first, the pup hesitated, sniffing nervously from a distance. But hunger finally overcame fear. Inch by inch, she crept forward — until at last, she was safe inside the trap. Selina and Mia’s hearts lifted with relief.
“She couldn’t resist, and it actually worked,” Selina said with a smile.
A timid puppy turns into a love bug
Once out of the sewer, the rescuers were surprised to find that despite her ordeal, the puppy was in fairly good health. Selina named her Dumbo — after the big-eared Disney elephant, because of her gentle eyes and slightly oversized ears.
At first, Dumbo was shy and cautious, unsure if she could trust her new surroundings. But the safety and love of a foster home soon transformed her. Day by day, her true personality began to shine.
“She changed from being extremely timid and shy to owning her space and being confident,” Selina said.
To Selina’s delight, Dumbo turned out to be incredibly affectionate. Whenever Selina sat down, Dumbo would climb into her lap and wrap all four paws around her, holding on tightly as if she never wanted to be let go.

Waiting for her forever home
Two years have passed since that fateful rescue, and Dumbo has blossomed into a happy, healthy, and loving dog. She enjoys playing, cuddling, and being close to the people she trusts.
But despite her gentle nature, no family has yet stepped forward to adopt her. Selina cannot understand why — because she knows that Dumbo has so much love to give.
“When she opens up to someone, she really does,” Selina said. “And then she loves you to an extent that is unbelievable.”
A reminder of resilience and hope
Dumbo’s story is not just about a puppy pulled from a sewer — it’s about resilience, trust, and the power of kindness. From a place of darkness and fear, she has grown into a dog who radiates love. All she needs now is a family willing to open their home and heart.
For anyone looking for a loyal companion, Dumbo is proof that sometimes the dogs who’ve been through the hardest beginnings can give the purest love.
