On July 31, a routine traffic stop on U.S. Highway 101 in Monterey County turned into a major drug bust, thanks to the sharp instincts of CHP K9 officers. A white Chevrolet Silverado was pulled over by a CHP – Coastal Division officer for a minor violation. K9 “Rae” quickly detected the scent of narcotics, prompting a thorough search of the vehicle. Inside, officers uncovered about 30 pounds of suspected methamphetamine, sparking a deeper investigation.

A CHP detective stepped in, securing a search warrant for the driver’s residence in Los Banos. With assistance from the Los Banos Police Department and CHP K9 “Chip,” the team raided the home. K9 Chip’s keen nose led them to an additional 10 pounds of methamphetamine hidden in a bag. The combined effort resulted in the arrest of 37-year-old Alan Duran from Los Banos, who now faces multiple drug-related charges at Monterey County Jail.
The success of this operation highlights the critical role of K9 Rae and K9 Chip in safeguarding the community. Their ability to sniff out danger, paired with the support of the Los Banos Police Department, underscores the CHP’s commitment to enhancing safety and security. This incident showcases how dedicated teamwork can dismantle drug networks and protect public well-being.
The CHP’s mission, as emphasized by Governor Newsom, remains focused on delivering top-tier service and protection. This bust serves as a powerful example of law enforcement’s proactive approach to maintaining order and ensuring a safer environment for all.
