A foster couple, JJ Knight and Ella, welcomed Daisy — a pregnant rescue St. Bernard — not knowing she’d give birth just 4 days later. Daisy, underweight and low on calcium after years of overbreeding, delivered nine healthy puppies at the vet.

But once home, Daisy’s behavior shifted. She became distant from her pups and suddenly attacked Ella in a shocking moment caught on camera — a reaction many believe came from deep maternal instinct.
“Once the puppies started feeding, her calcium could crash — even cause seizures,” Knight explained. Experts warned this could explain her erratic behavior.
To protect the puppies, the couple bottle-fed all nine every two hours. Eventually, they got help from other fosters, and all nine puppies and Daisy were safely adopted.
