Scared Dog Finds Comfort and Trust in Her Rescuer’s Hand

A Heartbreaking Start for Niya

Niya, a five-year-old dog, was abandoned and left to suffer in silence. When she arrived at the Gibson County Animal Shelter in Trenton, Tennessee, she was nothing more than a shadow of the dog she once was. Her body had endured injuries, with a painful gash above her eye and wounds on her nose. But those were only the external scars — the emotional trauma she carried ran much deeper.

When Kimberley Slown of Arrow Dog Rescue arrived at the shelter to bring Niya home, the dog was too frightened to move. She was curled up in the corner, unable to trust anyone. It was clear that Niya had been deeply hurt — and not just physically, but emotionally as well.

A Tender Start to Healing

Niya’s first night in her new home was filled with fear and exhaustion. She spent the entire night and the next day curled up, barely moving. The shelter was a far cry from the peaceful life she had once known, and the trauma of her past weighed heavily on her. Yet, in the quiet of the night, something magical happened — a soft breath brushed against Kimberley’s hand as she slept. Niya, unsure but desperate for comfort, gently pressed her nose into Kimberley’s hand.

Kimberley woke up instantly. “I started petting her and talking to her,” she recalls. “And for the first time, she smiled.” Niya’s tail wagged slightly, the first sign of trust she had shown since her arrival. It was as though Niya knew she was safe, that she had finally found a human who would never hurt her.

The Road to Recovery

Niya’s journey to healing wasn’t instant, but the love and care she received from Kimberley and her wife, Terri, made all the difference. Over time, Niya’s spirit began to revive. After a visit to the veterinarian, she smiled her first genuine smile. And for the first time in ages, she found comfort in something soft — her very own bed.

But the most touching moment of all came when Niya’s tail flickered with joy. This was no longer the dog that once cowered in fear. This was a dog finding peace, warmth, and love. Niya was finally beginning to believe that she deserved happiness.

A Bright Future for Niya

Niya’s progress is a testament to the power of love, patience, and healing. Though she’s still recovering from physical issues like hookworms and whipworms, her emotional recovery is well on its way. She has already made so many strides, and the future looks bright for this once-broken dog.

Her story is not just about survival — it’s about resilience, trust, and the incredible transformation that happens when a dog finds the love they’ve always deserved. Niya still has a long road ahead before she’s ready for adoption, but with her spirit returning, there’s no doubt that her forever family is just around the corner.
