Moving across the world is never easy — especially with pets. But for one British couple who relocated to Costa Rica with their two cats, their journey became more than a life adventure. It turned into a mission of compassion, rescued dog, and second chances.

A Home That Grew from Four Paws to Many

Eighteen months ago, my husband and I left the UK for the wild beauty of Costa Rica, bringing our two beloved cats along. We had heard about the stray animal crisis in the country, but seeing it firsthand hit hard. Within weeks, we adopted two tiny stray kittens in desperate need of care. While we’ve always been proud cat lovers, the truth is — we’re animal lovers above all else. Turning away from suffering was never an option.

And then came Toast.

The Unexpected Rescued Dog

While hiking with friends, we stumbled upon a heartbreaking sight: a scrawny, abandoned puppy, trembling and clearly starving. Her eyes said everything. She had been left behind. Without experience raising a dog — and with no clue how she’d get along with our feline family — we didn’t hesitate. We wrapped her up and brought her home.

Her name is Toast, and she’s changed our lives in every way.

Learning to Be Loved

Toast struggled at first. Toilet training was a mess, and she’s still a wild spirit when off-leash. But her joy is contagious. She adores the cats (the feeling’s… not mutual), loves cuddles, naps in sunbeams, and unfortunately, has developed a taste for our sofa cushions.

But she’s learning. She’s growing. And most importantly, she knows she’s home.

Real Beauty Isn’t Always Polished

Toast isn’t a pedigree. She isn’t “perfect.” But she’s real beauty — a living reminder that love, patience, and kindness can turn fear into trust. Her goofy tail wags and sleepy smiles remind us daily that some of the most beautiful souls are the ones society throws away.

Our little house is bursting at the seams, but our hearts are even fuller. As soon as we finish our home extension, we plan to adopt a neonate kitten — one that Toast can help raise. She deserves a friend of her own, and we know she’ll love being a big sister.
