A Broken Leg, But an Unbreakable Spirit: How a Lonely Shelter Puppy Found Love and Hope

In the heart of Brooklyn, a small, broken puppy named Buggy changed the life of a rescuer in ways no one could have predicted. Sometimes, a dog’s past pain can be so overwhelming that she falls into the arms of the first person who offers hope. For Buggy, that person was Marisa Grimshaw from the rescue organization Mr. Bones & Co., and what followed was a story of deep love, trust, and a future full of promise.

On a Monday morning, Grimshaw received an urgent plea from Animal Care Centers of NYC: a puppy had been found with a severely broken leg and was in desperate need of help. When Grimshaw saw the email, she couldn’t help but think of her own dog. “She was basically a baby version of my dog,” Grimshaw says. And just like that, she was hooked. “I was pretty adamant about us having to pull her,” she adds. This little puppy needed her, and Grimshaw wasn’t about to let her down.

When Grimshaw arrived at the shelter, she was met with a sight that broke her heart. Buggy, trembling and vulnerable, clung to Grimshaw the moment she was handed over. “She burrowed into my shoulder as far as she could go,” Grimshaw recalls. The tiny puppy just wanted to be held, to be loved, to feel safe again. In that moment, Grimshaw knew that this was the beginning of something beautiful.

The journey to the veterinary clinic was not an easy one. Buggy cried out in pain, but the moment she was placed on Grimshaw’s lap, she stopped. “Maybe not the safest thing,” Grimshaw laughs, “but she calmed down, and I just held her as I drove.” In that moment, Buggy’s trust in her rescuer grew, and Grimshaw couldn’t help but fall in love with the sweet pup.

Buggy’s condition was severe. The following day, she underwent surgery to repair the extensive break in her thighbone. “There will be plates and pins in her legs,” Grimshaw explains. “And obviously, keeping a puppy from moving around will be difficult.” Buggy’s recovery will be a long one, and Grimshaw estimates that she’ll need at least six weeks of healing before she can start looking for her forever home.

No one knows exactly what happened to Buggy before she was rescued—whether she fell, or even if she was kicked—but one thing is for certain: her past will not define her. “She’s young, and her leg, like her heart, will mend,” Grimshaw says. With the love and care she’s now receiving, Buggy’s future is bright. Her broken leg will heal, but it’s her unbreakable spirit that will shine through as she grows stronger each day.

This is the story of a puppy who, despite her pain, found her way into the arms of someone who would give her a second chance. And for Buggy, this is only the beginning of her journey toward healing and finding the loving home she deserves.

As she recovers, Buggy’s story reminds us all of the power of love and the impact of second chances. Every rescue pet has the potential to bring endless joy and companionship, proving that with hope, anything is possible.
