On a quiet day in St. Louis, Missouri, a man stepped off a bus, expecting nothing more than a simple walk home. But waiting at the bus stop was a lonely dog, sitting silently as if he’d been waiting for someone special. The man greeted him briefly and went on his way — only to discover, moments later, that the dog had chosen to follow him all the way to his yard.

“This sweet boy just decided to follow him home,” recalled Donna Lochmann, chief life saving officer at Stray Rescue of St. Louis (SRSL). “The man placed him safely in his backyard and called us right away.”
The dog didn’t resist. Without hesitation, he stepped inside the yard, calm and trusting, as though he knew deep down that this was the turning point of his life. When Lochmann and her rescue partner Natalie arrived, they expected a frightened stray — maybe even defensive. Instead, what they found was a gentle soul, ready to trust and eager for kindness.

“He was a total sweetheart from the start,” Lochmann said. “We slipped a leash on him easily, and he walked with us without a fuss.”
They named him Orville, a name that now carries hope and new beginnings. On the drive to the shelter, Orville surprised them again. Unlike most dogs, who settle into the back seat, Orville wanted to be right up front, close to his rescuers, grinning ear to ear as though he knew he was finally safe.

At the shelter, his joy overflowed. His tail wagged constantly, greeting everyone with enthusiasm. When he met the veterinary team, Orville didn’t shy away — he climbed directly into a staff member’s lap, seeking affection like a pup who had waited his whole life for love.
“He is beyond adorable,” SRSL shared in a Facebook post. “We’re so happy he’s safe and finally getting the love he deserves.”
With his wounds cleaned, a hearty meal in his belly, and a warm kennel to rest in, Orville began to thrive. Though his past remains a mystery, his present is filled with care, comfort, and endless affection.

Now strong and healthy, Orville is officially ready for adoption. No family has stepped forward just yet, but his rescuers believe it’s only a matter of time before the perfect home finds him. Until then, Orville continues to shower the shelter team with boundless love — a living reminder that sometimes, it isn’t us who choose the dog. Sometimes, it’s the dog who chooses us.
