When Adriana Figueroa’s phone lit up with a message on a cold January morning, she sensed it wasn’t just another ordinary call. As a volunteer rescuer with Women’s Volunteer Miami, she was no stranger to urgent pleas for help. But this one carried a weight she couldn’t ignore: a stray mother dog was in desperate condition and time was running out.
Adriana hurried to the neighborhood, scanning every corner until her eyes landed on a thin, weary figure. The dog — later named Veviana — stood tense, her body frail yet her gaze fierce, as though guarding something more precious than her own life.

“I followed her at a distance,” Adriana recalled. “And then she slipped quietly beneath a house.”
What Adriana discovered left her breathless. In the dim crawl space, pairs of tiny eyes glimmered back at her. One by one, puppies emerged from the shadows — eight fragile lives curled against the dirt, waiting for their mother’s return.

Despite her exhaustion, Veviana’s tail wagged gently as she nestled beside them. She had survived on scraps, yet somehow managed to keep her babies alive. “It broke my heart,” Adriana said softly. “It was just her and her little ones, clinging to each other, trying to survive.”

The rescue was far from simple. Each time Adriana reached out, Veviana would retreat, guiding her puppies deeper into the darkness. Hours slipped away. Dirt smeared Adriana’s arms, her eyes stung with tears, but she refused to quit. At last, after three determined hours, all eight puppies were pulled to safety.
Still, Adriana felt something was missing. She returned at dawn the next day — and her instinct proved right. Hidden away in the crawl space was one final pup. In total, nine tiny lives were saved: Tater, Sunshine, Sugar, Spud, Scarlett, Rouge, Poochie, Jerry, and Bonnie.
When the siblings were reunited, their cries filled the air. The moment Veviana heard them, her tired body stirred to life. She rushed to her puppies, wrapping them in the comfort only a mother can give. For the first time, she was no longer alone in her fight.

Over the next days, Adriana fostered the fragile family until Big Dog Ranch Rescue stepped in. Six puppies have since found homes, while Veviana and three of her babies still wait — their chance at love just around the corner.
“Veviana may be shy at first,” BDRR shared on Instagram, “but her heart is overflowing with love. She spent her life protecting her family. Now it’s her turn to be cherished.”
From a cold crawl space to the warmth of new beginnings, Veviana’s story shines as a testament to a mother’s devotion — and to the quiet miracles that compassion makes possible.
