A Second Chance for the Dog With “Dreadlocks”

Sometimes, the most heartbreaking stories begin on the side of the road.

That morning in Orange County, California, volunteer rescuer Mary Nakiso was driving when she noticed a large, furry figure trembling against a wall. Curious and worried, she stopped her car. What she saw left her frozen: a giant dog, tangled in layers of filthy fur, eyes full of fear.

“He’s nearly 75 pounds, but at that moment, he looked like a helpless child,” recalled Suzette Hall, founder of Logan’s Legacy 29.

Locals later revealed the painful truth — the dog had just been abandoned by his family. One minute he was loved, the next, he was left confused in the middle of the street. Witnesses even said a large jeep had nearly run him over as he frantically circled in traffic, searching for the people who had vanished from his life.

The dog — later named Benji — disappeared into the neighborhood, his matted fur making him look like he was wearing “dreadlocks.” Mary immediately called Suzette, and together, they started tracking reports on community pages. Hours later, someone spotted the giant stray pacing nervously near their house.

Traffic kept Suzette from reaching him in time, so she turned to her network of rescuers. Within minutes, three friends — Nuñez, Yamileth and Karla — rushed to help. They found Benji running back and forth, too terrified to trust anyone. Patiently, they waited for him to tire himself out.

Finally, the moment came. With gentle guidance, they led him into a yard and shut the gate. Suzette’s phone buzzed with the message she had been waiting for:

“He’s safe.”

Tears filled her eyes. The nightmare was over.

That same evening, Benji was carried into Camino Pet Hospital, where months of neglect were shaved away. Underneath the thick, dirty coat was a handsome dog with the kindest eyes.

“Each snip of fur felt like removing a piece of his painful past,” Suzette shared.

Benji’s journey has only just begun. After neutering and recovery, he will meet his foster family — the first step toward a forever home where abandonment will never haunt him again.

For Suzette, Benji is more than just a rescue.

“He’s the sweetest, most loving dog I’ve ever met,” she said. “Truly, a miracle.”

Now, thanks to the kindness of strangers who came together like neighbors, Benji has a future filled not with fear, but with love.
