At Dekalb Humane Society (DHS), the staff have seen countless animals arrive in desperate need. But one recent arrival has captured hearts in a way no one expected — a scruffy, scrunkly little kitten whose appearance is as unusual as his spirit is extraordinary.
They call him Sewer Rat.
At just 7 weeks old, Sewer Rat was found completely alone — a tiny, orphaned kitten stranded in the middle of a road in a trailer park. His matted fur and fragile body told the story of a rough start to life. “He was in really rough shape when he came to us,” said Teresa Feightner, DHS’ director. “But even then, he was fighting.”

After a careful medical exam, the team discovered what made him so disheveled: one of the worst cases of ringworm they’d seen in years. The contagious fungal infection left his fur patchy and his skin irritated. Yet, in spite of the discomfort, Sewer Rat showed a sweetness that amazed everyone.
“He’s a little angel,” Feightner explained. “He loves to nap on your chest, he’s gentle, resilient, and so incredibly charming. Everyone here is smitten with him.”
Though his looks have sparked laughter online — “He’s got that ‘I just woke up in a ditch’ energy,” DHS joked — those closest to him see something far deeper. Behind the crusty fur and funny face is a kitten who radiates affection, patience, and trust, even after being abandoned so young.

Now in foster care, Sewer Rat continues to heal. His ringworm is slowly improving, and once he is fully recovered, he’ll be ready for neutering and adoption. His ideal forever family will be one willing to offer him patience, love, and maybe even a spare room while he finishes treatment.
DHS believes that someone out there will see what they see — a unique, loving little soul who deserves his happily ever after. “We know he isn’t everyone’s type,” they wrote. “But he’s sweet, playful, healing, and so much closer to being okay.”

Sewer Rat has already proven that beauty isn’t about a perfect coat or bright eyes. Sometimes, true beauty is about resilience, spirit, and the ability to love despite hardship. And for that reason, the staff at DHS know this scrappy little gremlin will one day find the family he’s been waiting for.
Until then, they’ll keep sharing his story — not just to help Sewer Rat find a home, but to remind the world that even the most overlooked shelter pets deserve a chance at forever love
