For most of her life, Beanie never knew what love felt like. Deaf, blind, and timid, she had never experienced a gentle touch or the warmth of human affection — until the day Julie Elrod adopted her. From that moment on, Beanie’s world changed forever.

A Bond Built Through Dance
Since welcoming Beanie home in 2018 from Rescue Dogs Rock, Elrod has created a unique ritual with her: slow dancing.

“I have been dancing with Beanie every single day since the day we adopted her,” Elrod told The Dodo. “Because she is blind and deaf, the only way I can truly communicate with her is through touch.”
At first, Beanie resisted any kind of closeness. She would pull away, preferring to be alone. But Elrod refused to give up. Day after day, she gently held Beanie close, swaying back and forth in what she calls “slow dance therapy.”
Even though Beanie cannot hear, Elrod softly sings to her during their dances. Over time, the once-fearful pup began to relax in her mom’s arms, trusting her completely.

Healing Through Love
“Now, she melts into my body,” Elrod said. “It doesn’t matter what appointments I have or who I’m supposed to meet — I always make time to slow dance with my best friend and soulmate.”
The transformation has been remarkable. What started as a dog who didn’t know how to love or be loved has grown into a trusting companion. Beanie still doesn’t wag her tail or give kisses like other dogs, but she has her own ways of showing love.
“She’s in my arms almost 24 hours a day,” Elrod shared. “Wherever I go, she goes. That’s how she tells me she loves me.”

More Than Just a Rescue
Beanie’s journey hasn’t been easy. She struggled with eating, learning basic routines, and even allowing touch. But through Elrod’s patience and unwavering love, she has bloomed.
For Elrod, the gift of being Beanie’s mom is priceless.
“I wouldn’t trade being Beanie’s mom for anything,” she said. “I love her infinitely. Beanie is my soulmate dog, and I thank God for every second I get to spend with her. No amount of time will ever feel like enough.”
A Forever Dance

What began as an act of comfort has become the heart of their relationship. Every slow dance is a reminder that love doesn’t need words, sight, or sound — just trust, patience, and presence.
Through the rhythm of their daily dances, Beanie has finally discovered the love she never knew — and Elrod has found her soulmate in a tiny dog who changed her life forever.
