Luna, a 9-year-old pit bull–terrier mix rescue dog, has been given a second chance at love after heartbreak — and a devastating diagnosis.

In October 2024, Luna was rescued from the streets of Chicago, where she had been found emaciated and abused. After recovering in a foster home, she was adopted and seemed to have found her forever family. But just six months later, her owners returned her to the Chicago Animal Rescue Center, citing work schedule changes and the inability to provide proper care.
Shelter staff soon noticed a lump on Luna’s neck. A biopsy revealed aggressive, inoperable cancer that had already spread to multiple lymph nodes. While there is no cure, Luna still had life and love to give — she just needed a place to spend her final days.
That’s when a familiar face stepped in: Alex Ramirez, a longtime volunteer and the same foster who first cared for Luna after her rescue. When asked to take on a “fospice” case — fostering a terminally ill pet — Alex didn’t hesitate.

“My bond with Luna is like no other. She’s gentle, sweet, and she deserves every ounce of love we can give her,” Alex shared. “Now that she’s back with me, I’m making sure her last days are full of joy, comfort, and dignity.”
Since returning to Alex’s home, Luna has enjoyed daily park walks, sunny afternoons on the porch, and endless cuddles. Her story serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of fostering — especially for senior and terminally ill dogs.
“Fostering saves lives,” said Maria Lopez, director of the Chicago Animal Rescue Center. “It opens space in shelters, gives pets a safe place to heal, and, in cases like Luna’s, ensures they leave this world surrounded by love.”

Luna’s days may be limited, but with Alex by her side, she will spend every moment knowing she is cherished.
