When Jasper was first discovered wandering the streets, he was little more than a shadow of a dog. Malnourished, covered in mange, and trembling at the slightest noise, no one could imagine that this shy soul would one day learn to run free at the park, swim in the lake, and wag his tail at strangers.
But all it took was one unlikely friendship to change everything.
A Rocky Start for Jasper
Rescued at just one year old, Jasper was brought to Austin Pets Alive (APA). Volunteers quickly noticed his deep anxiety. Loud noises, car rides, even the gentle approach of a kind hand would send him retreating in fear. Though families tried to adopt him, his panic made him too difficult to manage. He was returned—twice.
By the time Tom Paradis and his girlfriend Rachel met him, Jasper had nearly given up hope. “He was afraid of everything—people, walks, even the car,” Rachel recalled. “It broke our hearts, but we couldn’t give up on him.”
Enter Ernie: The Unstoppable Pup
One day, Tom had an idea: what if Jasper wasn’t meant to heal alone? At APA, he met a spirited little pit bull puppy named Ernie. Unlike Jasper, Ernie was bold, fearless, and brimming with energy.
Originally pulled from a high-kill shelter with his mother and siblings, Ernie had already defied the odds. His father hadn’t survived, but Ernie’s zest for life never wavered. Tom thought maybe—just maybe—this playful puppy could help Jasper discover what it meant to be a dog again.
From Strangers to Brothers
At first, Jasper wanted nothing to do with Ernie. The bouncy puppy was too loud, too curious, too… everything. But Tom trusted his instinct. Slowly, Ernie’s carefree nature began to chip away at Jasper’s walls.
“Ernie taught Jasper how to play,” Rachel explained. “He showed him that walks could be fun, that swimming was exciting, and that not every stranger was scary.”
Now, the once-fearful dog and his exuberant brother are inseparable. Jasper still gets anxious at times, but when Ernie is by his side, courage seems to come easier.
A New Life Together
At six years old, Jasper has transformed into a dog his rescuers barely recognize. He still avoids noisy crowds, but he now enjoys trips to the park, making friends, and even chasing waves at the lake—always with Ernie close by.
Meanwhile, Ernie has discovered his calling. Every foster puppy that comes into the family’s home gets the same warm welcome: gentle play, patient guidance, and endless cuddles. “Ernie thinks every dog deserves a chance to feel safe,” Rachel laughed. “It’s like he was born to be a big brother.”
To date, Jasper and Ernie’s family has fostered over ten dogs, each finding a forever home thanks to their support.
The Power of Friendship
Jasper may never be completely fearless, but with Ernie at his side, he has become braver than anyone thought possible. Their story is a reminder that sometimes healing doesn’t come from medicine or training alone—it comes from love, patience, and the steady heartbeat of a friend.
Because every dog deserves a chance to feel safe, to feel loved, and to find their Ernie.
