When rescuers from Beagles and Bentleys walked into a shelter in May 2023, their eyes fell on a sight they would never forget. Huddled in the corner of her kennel was a tiny, hairless puppy. At just 3 months old, she looked far older — her pink, wrinkled skin cracked open with every move, raw and inflamed from neglect.
“She was so young, yet already in such a heartbreaking condition,” said McKenzie Licata, who agreed to foster her. “You could just tell how much she hurt.”
The team named her Rosie, though at that moment, she was a shadow of what a happy puppy should be.
The Sweetest Soul in Pain
Despite her obvious suffering, Rosie never snapped, never growled, never resisted. Instead, she leaned into every gentle touch, as if she somehow knew these people were different. Soon, a vet diagnosed her with demodex mange, a condition caused by mites that left her skin raw and defenseless.
Licata prepared herself for a battle. She had fostered many dogs before, but Rosie’s case was severe. She expected fear, mistrust, and resistance. Instead, Rosie gave her quiet patience and an unspoken trust.
“From the start, she accepted our care. She let us bathe her, treat her wounds, and cradle her, even though she must’ve been in agony,” Licata recalled.
A Puppy Reborn
Day after day, Rosie endured medicated baths, soothing ointments, and careful feedings. Slowly, her skin stopped bleeding. Slowly, her eyes grew brighter. Slowly, the little spark inside her turned into a flame.
By the fourth week, something miraculous happened — Rosie’s fur began to grow back. Tiny gray tufts covered her once-bald body. With each strand of fur, Rosie seemed to shed her painful past and embrace her new beginning.
“She suddenly had that puppy energy we hadn’t seen before,” Licata said. “She started running, playing with her foster siblings, and she absolutely did not want to miss out on anything.”
Rosie had developed a serious case of FOMO — if her foster family left the house, Rosie insisted on tagging along. From errands to outdoor adventures, Rosie wanted to be part of it all.
A New Chapter: Finding Home
After two months of dedicated care, Rosie was unrecognizable. Her once pink and wrinkled skin now glowed with health, hidden beneath a soft, shiny gray coat. Her transformation was so remarkable that even strangers were moved by her story.
While Rosie’s foster dad took her to his firehouse to help with socialization, Beagles and Bentleys reviewed adoption applications. It wasn’t long before the perfect family appeared — kind-hearted people who had a history of loving rescues.
“The moment I spoke with them, I knew they were the right match,” Licata said.
Rosie left with her new family not long after, her tail wagging and her spirit finally free. Today, she thrives in a forever home where she’s cherished and adored.
Bittersweet Goodbyes
For Licata, saying farewell was emotional. She had poured her heart into Rosie’s recovery and witnessed her transformation firsthand.
“It’s bittersweet,” Licata admitted. “Rosie became part of our family. But knowing she’s now safe, loved, and happy makes every hard moment worth it. Because this goodbye means I can save another dog like her.”
