Jenna Ortega Says Social Media Makes It Harder for Gen Z to Discover Their True Identity

Wednesday star Jenna Ortega is opening up about the struggles young people face in the age of social media — and why her hit Netflix series resonates so deeply with Gen Z audiences.

In a new interview with the BBC, the 22-year-old actress reflected on how online culture is reshaping identity and community, particularly for younger generations.

“There are so many voices and opinions online,” Ortega said. “It’s harder than ever to find a sense of self. Young people are asking, ‘What makes me stand out? What gives me a sense of purpose or control?’”

Ortega, who stars as the iconic Wednesday Addams, believes that the show’s success stems from its portrayal of loneliness, belonging, and the search for identity — themes that mirror the real-life challenges of growing up in the digital age.

“We don’t talk to each other in person as much anymore,” she noted. “Instead, we’re finding our communities online, which can feel very isolating.”

The Beetlejuice Beetlejuice actress has previously been candid about her complicated relationship with social media. In a 2024 appearance on The Interview podcast by The New York Times, Ortega recalled the darker side of early fame, saying:

“I hated being 14 and seeing disturbing, edited images of myself online. It’s terrifying — it’s wrong. But we’ve opened Pandora’s box. It’s out there now.”

As Jenna Ortega prepares for the release of Wednesday Season 2 — premiering August 6 (Part 1) and September 3 (Part 2) on Netflix — she continues to be a powerful voice for Gen Z, shedding light on the emotional toll of fame, tech, and growing up in a hyperconnected world.
