Pit Bull Mara’s Race Against Time To Find Her Forever Family

When Mara, a sweet-natured American Pit Bull Terrier, was rescued from a high-kill shelter in Georgia, she had only hours left to live. In December 2022, she sat quietly in her kennel at Rockdale County Animal Shelter, unaware that her time was almost up.

To many, she was just another “unwanted pit bull” — a misunderstood breed unfairly feared. But to those who took the time to look closer, Mara’s gentle spirit shone through.

A Life Saved In The Nick of Time

Just as the clock was running out, Braveheart Bulliez Rescue stepped forward. They couldn’t ignore the photos of Mara’s soulful eyes.

“As soon as we saw her, we knew she deserved another chance,” said Krystle Carrara, founder of Braveheart Bulliez. “She looked at us with so much trust, even after everything she’d been through.”

Mara’s freedom ride should have marked the start of her happy ending. But her journey would prove to be far more difficult.

Promises Broken, Hope Fading

Initially, Mara had sponsors who covered her adoption fees and a foster family waiting. But within weeks, both fell through. Her foster backed out suddenly, and her sponsors disappeared without explanation.

“Overnight, she had no home, no support,” Carrara recalled. “It was heartbreaking to watch her be let down again.”

A Star Student, Still Overlooked

Determined to help Mara succeed, Braveheart Bulliez enrolled her in a two-month professional training program. She thrived. Trainers described her as “eager, intelligent, and affectionate.” She mastered commands, gained confidence, and learned to trust again.

But even after graduating as a star pupil, no one stepped forward to foster or adopt her. Mara was left in boarding for nearly 10 months. Though she wagged her tail each day, the loneliness began to take its toll.

A Miracle Foster Appears

Then, in January 2024, a small miracle arrived. A woman searching for a special needs foster dog came across Mara’s profile.

“She didn’t just see Mara’s breed — she saw her heart,” Carrara said. “We knew instantly this was the chance Mara had been waiting for.”

Mara quickly blossomed in her foster home. She spent her days cuddling with her foster grandparents, showing off her favorite stuffed animals, and snuggling into bed as if she had always belonged there. She even surprised everyone by calmly greeting the neighbor’s husky, proving just how far she had come.

“She’s convinced she’s a lapdog,” Carrara laughed. “At night, she tucks herself into bed and rests her head on your shoulder.”

Another Race Against Time

But Mara’s story is not finished. Her foster family is set to move overseas in six months, and once again, this gentle soul is on borrowed time.

“She has so much love to give,” Carrara pleaded. “Mara deserves a family who won’t give up on her — a family who sees her not as a breed, but as the incredible dog she truly is.”

A Chance To Be Loved Forever

For now, Mara is safe, cherished, and enjoying the simple joys of family life. But unless a permanent home steps forward, she could face heartbreak once more.

Her story is a reminder that rescue dogs aren’t broken — they are survivors. All they need is someone willing to look beyond stereotypes and promises broken, and finally give them the love they’ve been waiting for.
