Retired Police Dog Turns Hero Again on First Walk After Major Surgery!

In an incredible twist of fate, a retired police dog named Bear, a German Shepherd, rescued a vulnerable missing man in East Sussex—all during his first walk since undergoing life-saving surgery.

Bear, celebrating his 12th birthday, was walking with his owner Julia Pope, a former Sussex police officer, when he suddenly “switched into work mode.” He became alert, sniffed intensely, and led Pope to a dense bush area. There, they found a man who was soaking wet, cold, and too weak to stand. The man had been missing for hours, and police had been unable to locate him.

“He was dazed, freezing, and collapsed. I honestly don’t think he would’ve survived the night,” Pope recalled.

Though retired in 2020, Bear had remained active as a mental health and trauma support dog for police officers. Just weeks before the rescue, Bear had undergone surgery to remove two benign tumors, following a major spinal operation that left him temporarily unable to use his hind legs.

Thanks to the support of The Thin Blue Paw Foundation, a UK charity for retired service dogs, Bear received medical care and recovery support. But no one expected him to jump back into life-saving action so soon.

“RPD Bear is a true hero,” said Kieran Stanbridge, a trustee of the foundation. “His training and instincts kicked in and led his owner to someone in desperate need of help.”

Bear’s unexpected act of bravery reminds us that some heroes wear fur and never truly retire. His story has since inspired countless people and serves as a powerful example of the enduring bond between service animals and their community.
