Seven Years Waiting, One Man’s Choice

When Mark Davis first volunteered at Haven Animal Care Shelter back in 2020, one senior dog instantly stole his heart. A black pittie named Rocky, with gray slowly creeping into his fur, wagged his tail wildly and covered Mark with kisses the very first day.

“From that moment, I knew there was something special about him,” Mark recalled.

Rocky’s story made the bond even deeper. Found years earlier as a stray wandering alone in a cemetery, Rocky had entered the shelter in 2015 — already carrying the scars of a hard life. Despite his playful spirit, year after year, people overlooked him. Puppies were always chosen first, while Rocky sat patiently behind the kennel bars.

By the time Mark met him, Rocky had already spent five long years waiting. His once-dark coat had started to turn silver, but he never stopped hoping that someone would finally take him home.

Two years later, Mark received news that he’d been accepted into veterinary school. While it was a dream come true, one thought haunted him: leaving Rocky behind. The idea that the old dog might spend the rest of his life in a shelter broke his heart.

So, Mark made the decision that would change both of their lives. He adopted Rocky. For the first time in seven years, Rocky finally had a home.

Outside the shelter walls, Rocky’s personality bloomed even more. He followed Mark everywhere, curling up beside him during study sessions and seeking out every chance for affection.

“All this time, all he ever wanted was someone to stay by his side,” Mark said.

Now, man and dog are inseparable. They walk together, rest together, and share a bond built from years of waiting and a single act of choice.

Mark hopes Rocky’s journey will remind others to look past the puppies and notice the senior dogs who have waited the longest. Because sometimes, the greatest love stories begin with the ones overlooked.
