On a rainy afternoon in Casablanca, Morocco, a tiny stray kitten walked into a crowded coffee shop — and changed his life forever.
Most people barely noticed the scruffy little creature weaving between the tables. His fur was matted, his belly sunken, and his whiskers bent from hardship. But despite the odds stacked against him, the kitten carried himself with the confidence of someone who knew exactly what he wanted: love.
One by one, he jumped into customers’ laps, purring so loudly that even the sound of clinking coffee cups couldn’t drown him out. Some people smiled and stroked him, others gently placed him back on the floor, but the kitten didn’t give up. He was determined to find someone who would finally see him — not just as a stray, but as family.
That’s when he found Yassine Harouchi.
Yassine, a young man sipping his coffee while finishing some work, suddenly had a small ball of fur curl up in his lap. The kitten pressed his tiny head against Yassine’s chest and began purring, as if declaring, “I choose you.”
“He wouldn’t let anybody work,” Yassine later recalled with a laugh. “The moment he found me, he clung to me like I was already his.”
But as the café prepared to close, reality set in. The owner wanted to put the kitten back outside. The streets were wet and cold, and a fragile creature like him would never make it through the night. Yassine looked down at the kitten, who gazed back with trusting eyes, and in that moment the decision was made.
“OK, you know what? Don’t bother. He’s staying with me,” Yassine told the café staff.
What no one knew was that Yassine was no ordinary coffee drinker — he also ran a small rescue initiative called The Yass House, a safe haven for abandoned cats across Morocco. With years of experience caring for vulnerable felines, he knew the first stop had to be the vet.
The little kitten, whom Yassine later named Chai, was diagnosed with a respiratory infection and placed under quarantine. For nine long days, Chai was kept in a warm blanket, fed tiny meals, and given medication. At first, he cried whenever Yassine left the room, desperate for affection. But slowly, his energy returned. His eyes cleared, his purrs grew stronger, and soon he was bouncing around the apartment like a tiny whirlwind of joy.
Yassine couldn’t help but notice something else — Chai wasn’t just playful, he was longing for companionship. Every time Yassine’s other rescue cats walked past his room, Chai squeaked and pawed at the door. He didn’t just want safety. He wanted a family.
Today, Chai no longer looks like the frail kitten who stumbled into a coffee shop. He has grown into a curious, adventurous cat, with endless love to give. He plays with his new feline siblings at The Yass House and still insists on climbing into Yassine’s lap every chance he gets — a reminder of the day he chose his human.
For Yassine, it was never just about saving one cat. It was about listening when a tiny voice asked for help in the loudest way it could.
“Sometimes,” he says, “we don’t rescue them. They rescue us.” 🐾❤️
