When Adriana Figueroa’s phone buzzed with a message one chilly January morning, she knew it was not just another routine call. As a volunteer rescuer with Women’s Volunteer Miami, she had seen countless pleas for help before. But this one was different. The message was short, urgent, and filled with worry: a stray female dog was in rough shape and needed help fast.
Without hesitation, Figueroa rushed to the neighborhood. Her eyes scanned the streets until she finally spotted her — a frail mother dog who would later be named Veviana. The weary pup looked both scared and determined, as if she had something to protect.
“I followed her quietly,” Figueroa recalled. “And that’s when I saw her slip into a dark crawl space beneath a house.”
What she found there took her breath away. In the shadows, tiny eyes blinked back at her. One by one, little puppies began to appear, huddled together in the dirt. Eight fragile lives, hidden away, waiting for their mama.
Veviana, though exhausted, wagged her tail softly as she rejoined her babies. She had been doing everything alone, surviving on scraps, and yet had managed to keep them safe. “It broke my heart,” Figueroa said. “It was just her and her babies, fighting for a safe place to exist.”
The rescue was not easy. Each time Figueroa reached into the crawl space, Veviana would retreat deeper, with the puppies following close behind. Hours passed. Dirt covered her hands and tears welled in her eyes, but she refused to give up. Finally, after three relentless hours, she had pulled eight puppies to safety.
Still, something told her the mission wasn’t finished. She left Veviana for the night, returning at dawn. Her instinct was right — the brave mama had one last puppy hidden away. In total, there were nine: Tater, Sunshine, Sugar, Spud, Scarlett, Rouge, Poochie, Jerry and Bonnie.
Reunited, the puppies cried out for their mother. And when Veviana heard their tiny voices, she immediately lifted her head, rushing to comfort them. For the first time, she wasn’t alone.
In the following days, Figueroa fostered the little family until Big Dog Ranch Rescue (BDRR) stepped in. Six of the puppies soon found loving homes. Veviana and three of her little ones still wait for adoption, but rescuers believe their happy ending is near.
“Veviana may be shy at first,” BDRR shared on Instagram, “but she has so much love to give. She spent her days protecting her babies — now it’s her turn to be cared for.”
From a dark crawl space to the promise of warm homes, Veviana’s story is a reminder of the strength of a mother’s love — and the miracles that happen when compassion steps in.
