The Inspiring Story of Lynda McConnell

Meet Lynda McConnell, the heart behind the Joey Gracie McConnell Foundation, a passionate animal rescuer, and a dedicated animal behaviorist. Whether she’s saving birds, horses, dogs, or bunnies, Lynda is always on the move, working to improve the lives of both animals and humans.

I first met Lynda when I was struggling with my dog Vegas. She showed up at my door with a human friend and a rescued bird. From there, Vegas and I were invited to a dog training course at Lynda’s house, where we met even more of her rescued animals. Vegas had a blast playing with Amy Winehouse, a quirky cat that Lynda had rescued.

Lynda is a true hero in every sense of the word, and she’s one of my closest animal-loving friends. Her story is inspiring and shows what passion, kindness, and determination can accomplish. Let me share more about this incredible woman.

Who is Lynda McConnell?

If you ask Lynda to describe herself, she’ll tell you she’s a free spirit, someone who can’t be confined or caged by rules. She has a huge heart and an unshakable loyalty, qualities that sometimes lead to heartache and disappointment, but she wouldn’t have it any other way. From a young age, Lynda felt a deeper connection to animals than people, which is why, when she had a nightmare as a child, she would crawl into the dog bed with Bonnie, the family Labrador, for comfort, rather than turn to her parents.

Lynda was born to British parents who met, fell in love, and married in South Africa. Seven years after their marriage, Lynda was born, followed by her sister Tracy. Growing up, she immersed herself in books, particularly classics like Alice in Wonderland and The Call of the Wild. When not reading, Lynda enjoys writing, drawing, graphic design, cycling, horse-riding, hiking, and following English football with a passion.

She’s now working on her own blog, Lyn Mac Versus the Universe—something to look out for soon.

The Joey Gracie McConnell Foundation: A Dream Realized

In 2008, Lynda took her love for animals to the next level by founding the Joey Gracie McConnell Animal Foundation in South Africa. The foundation was created with one mission in mind: to change the world for animals one paw at a time. Through the foundation, Lynda has been able to provide care and support to countless animals in need, including those in dire situations or facing neglect.

How Did It All Start?

The story behind the foundation is deeply personal. After Lynda lost her beloved dog Wendy, who had been her companion for 19 years, she swore she wouldn’t adopt another dog. But three months later, fate had other plans. Lynda crossed paths with Joey, a puppy who had been abandoned at a shopping center, left in the care of a car guard. When Lynda met Joey, it was as if he had found her, and their journey together began. Joey didn’t just rescue Lynda from her grief; he sparked the creation of a foundation dedicated to helping animals in need.

A Legacy of Compassion and Action

Today, the Joey Gracie McConnell Foundation continues to thrive, driven by Lynda’s compassion and unyielding commitment to animal welfare. Lynda’s work has made a tangible difference in countless animals’ lives, from offering a safe haven for rescues to providing medical care for those in need. The foundation’s reach and impact are a direct result of Lynda’s love for animals and her tireless dedication to making the world a better place for them.

Through her foundation, Lynda has proven that one person can indeed make a difference—one paw at a time.
