The first time Georgiana Neagu laid eyes on Nala, she struggled to believe this fragile creature was truly a puppy. Nala was painfully small, her fur completely gone, her skin cracked and raw. Swarmed by flies and weakened by disease, she looked like life itself was slipping away. Though she belonged to a family in Romania, love and care had never been part of her world. What Neagu saw was not just a sick puppy — she saw a soul crying for help.
At first, Nala’s family refused to let her go. Neagu visited regularly, bringing medicine and hope with every trip. Yet the sight of Nala only grew more heartbreaking. Her tiny body trembled from a severe calcium deficiency; every step was a struggle. Her once-bright spirit seemed to dim, fading into silence.

“I had to make a choice,” Neagu shared. “She was slipping away, and I couldn’t let her disappear. I needed to fight for her when she couldn’t fight for herself.”
At last, the family relented. Neagu carried Nala into the safety of Saving Orphaned Souls Sheila’s Animal Rescue Mission (SOS ARMS), where compassionate vets and fellow rescues embraced her. It was a turning point, but the road ahead would demand months of care, patience, and resilience.
The journey was anything but easy. There were days when Nala’s condition improved — a tiny patch of fur sprouting, a spark of energy returning. But there were also setbacks, days when her frailty reminded everyone just how close she had come to giving up. Yet through it all, she never stopped trusting. Her calm eyes followed Neagu everywhere, filled with an unwavering belief that love might save her.
Her transformation unfolded slowly, almost like magic. As her health improved, soft fur began to cover her body once again. For weeks, her head remained bald, leaving a mane-like ring around her neck. Neagu affectionately called her the “little lion” — a symbol of the courage hidden inside her delicate frame.

Eventually, the fur on her head grew back, and the sickly, hairless puppy gave way to something extraordinary. Nala blossomed into a fluffy, cuddly dog — so irresistibly soft she earned a new nickname: the “teddy bear.”
Today, Nala’s past feels like a distant shadow. Her body is strong, her spirit radiant. She runs, she plays, and she loves with all the openness of a heart that has endured suffering but chosen trust.
“She’s thriving now,” Neagu says proudly. “She’s beautiful, calm, and still young, with so much love to give. She proves to me every day that kindness can change everything.”
Nala’s story is more than survival. It is a testament to the healing power of compassion — a reminder that even the most broken souls can bloom again when given patience, love, and a chance.
Now, she waits for her forever home: a place not defined by neglect or pain, but by joy, safety, and unconditional love. To the world, she may always be remembered as the little lion who became a teddy bear. But to those who meet her, she is something even greater — a survivor with a heart of gold.
