Despite his physical differences, Beau’s health and mental capabilities were unaffected. Unfortunately, due to his appearance, breeders found it difficult to find a buyer for him, and Beau was eventually given away to a couple who let him suffer in isolation. His story could have ended there, but fate had other plans.

Everything changed for Beau when Jamie Hulit, an Austin, Texas, resident and longtime animal lover, saw a picture of him and decided she couldn’t let him suffer any longer. “I want that dog,” Jamie recalls telling her friend. “I don’t even want to foster him, I want him.”

The next evening, Jamie drove out to Beau’s owners’ house to pick him up. What she found was heartbreaking: a dog with a severe flea infestation, no medical care, and a life devoid of love. Beau’s condition was dire, and it was clear that he had been suffering for years. But Jamie wasn’t going to give up on him.

A Fight for Life: Beau’s Struggle and Recovery

After a thorough evaluation by Dr. Jay Rydberg, a veterinarian who helped save Beau’s life, the diagnosis was grim. Beau had heartworm, a dangerous and potentially fatal condition that affects a dog’s heart and lungs. The vet gave Jamie the choice: try to save him, or put him down. With no hesitation, Jamie chose to fight for his life. “Whatever it takes, let’s do it,” she said.

For the next month, Beau was placed on an oxygen tank, too sick to begin heartworm treatment. The battle wasn’t easy, and there were times when both Jamie and Dr. Rydberg feared they would lose him. One night, Dr. Rydberg even called Jamie to prepare for the worst, but Beau wasn’t ready to give up. Since his rescue, Beau has thrived in his new home with Jamie and her two other pets: Riley, a 13-year-old golden retriever, and Scout, the new addition to the family. Riley taught Beau how to become an indoor dog, while Scout is the playful boss of the pack, keeping Beau in check when he misbehaves.

Despite his unique appearance, Beau is the happiest, most confident dog you’ll ever meet. He doesn’t know that his face is different, and he doesn’t care. “He thinks he’s the most handsome thing there ever was,” says Jamie. Beau has a great sense of humor, and he’s known around the neighborhood for wearing a tie, which Jamie made to help soften his look. The tie has since become Beau’s signature style, and he loves looking “dapper.”

“He doesn’t know he’s deformed,” Jamie says, laughing. “We just let him think that.”
